4 Methods How To Make A Phone Case
How To Make A Phone Case - Mobile phones come in many shapes and sizes, and finding a case that fits your phone can sometimes be difficult and expensive. Luckily, making a custom phone case is easier than you think. You can easily make a case at home using a hot glue gun or some silicone and cornstarch. You can also make a simple protective sleeve out of felt. If you already have a plastic case, why not decorate it to make it stand out?
- How to make a phone case with hot glue
If necessary, stick a template on the back of your phone. It's difficult to make a smooth case with hot glue, so most people opt for patterns like swirls or mandalas. You can freehand or trace the pattern. If you want to track it, do the following:
Draw your phone on a piece of paper.
Draw your pattern with a black marker. Make sure the design touches the sides.
Cut out the template along the outline.
Stick the template on the back of your phone.
Wrap your phone in parchment paper like a gift. Cut out a sheet of parchment paper about twice the size of your phone. Place your phone on it with the screen facing up. Wrap the paper over the side edges of your phone, then secure with a piece of tape. Wrap the top and bottom edges and secure with tape as well.
Wrap your phone as tightly as possible.
Make sure the phone is turned off first to avoid overheating.
Make sure you tape everything to the front of the phone.
Mark the camera, sockets and buttons with a pen or colored pencil. These are your guidelines so you don't accidentally cover them with hot glue.
Make sure the color you use is what you see on your phone.
Sketch the sockets, buttons and the camera. This includes the speaker and microphone holes. If you cover them up, you won't be able to use your phone properly.
Fill in the side edges. Make sure you get them nice and thick. Also, make sure to avoid the buttons and sockets.
Fill in the back. Again, hot glue isn't the best medium for creating a perfectly smooth case, so it's best to make a pattern texture. Whatever you decide to do, make sure all the wires are connected to both the sides of the phone and each other.
Sketch the front. You can just draw a thin line around the front of the phone, just next to the side edge. You can also make a series of small dots instead. This gives your case a lip and helps it stay on your phone.
Remove the wrapper and parchment paper. Once the glue has set, peel it off your phone. Next, remove the parchment paper from the phone. At this point it would be a good idea to test the case on the phone. If a button, socket, etc. is covered with glue, you can cut it off with a craft blade.
Paint the case if desired. When you are satisfied with the case, take it off the phone. Paint the outside with nail polish and then let the polish dry. If you want the case to be a solid color, you can use spray paint instead.
- How to making a silicone phone case
Put on plastic gloves and protect your work surface. Cover your counter with plastic wrap, parchment paper, or wax paper. You can work on a marble counter or glass top instead.
Try to work in a well-ventilated area. Silicone can have a strong odor.
The silicone used in this method is not the same as hot glue.
Measure out your cornstarch and clear silicone. Pour some cornstarch onto a smooth counter or into a glass bowl, then squeeze some clear silicone on top. The measurements don't have to be exact; You just want more cornstarch than silicone. Plan on about 5 tablespoons (50 grams) of cornstarch and 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 40 grams) of silicone.
Make sure you use clear silicone. You can find it in hardware stores. It comes in a syringe.
If you can't find cornstarch, look for cornmeal. You can also use potato starch instead.
Consider adding some color. You don't have to do this, but it's a good way to make your phone case look more interesting. If you don't, your phone case will look white. You use a few drops of liquid paint, liquid watercolor, food coloring or acrylic paint.
Knead everything together until the silicone becomes a dough. You need to knead it about 20 times or so. You won't absorb all of the cornstarch, which is normal. The dough may look crumbly at first - just keep kneading!
Roll the dough into a flat sheet. You can do this with a rolling pin, a glass, a wine bottle, or even a spray can. Keep rolling until you have a sheet that's slightly larger than your phone. It should be about 1/8 inch thick.
Put your phone on the sheet. Make sure your strainer is facing up with equal (or close to) amounts of batter sticking out on each side.
Wrap the dough over the sides and top of your phone. Slide a paint spatula under the dough, then lift and fold the dough over the sides of the phone. Smooth out any creases or wrinkles; try to be as tidy as possible.
If needed, use stamps to indent designs. Turn your phone over and dust with cornstarch. Use a stamp to indent designs within. You can use cardboard cutouts instead to create your own unique designs. Lift off the stamp when you're done.
If you want to make a quilted design, let the silicone set for about 10-20 minutes, then dust with cornstarch. Use a knife to make crossing diagonal lines in a diamond/quilt pattern.
Allow the silicone to dry before removing it. How long this takes depends on the type of silicone used and the weather conditions. It can last as little as two hours or as long as 24 hours. Once it feels dry and tight (you can't dent it), peel it off your phone.
If the inside of the case is dusty, wipe it with a damp cloth.
Cut away the excess silicone from the front. Cut it about 7 millimeters from the side edges and 1 centimeter from the top and bottom edges. Alternatively, you can cut along the indentations created by the seam between the phone's screen and the case.
Cut out all indentations. If you looked inside your phone case, you would see small indentations caused by the camera, flash, buttons, and jacks. Cut out all of these with a sharp craft blade.
You can also carve a rectangle or trapezoid into the top and/or bottom edge for the speaker instead of cutting out a slot.
Sand the case smooth if desired. If you'd like, you can apply more raw silicone to it and then smooth it out with a paint spatula or popsicle stick.
Paint the stamped areas with nail polish if desired. Choose a color that goes well with your case. Metallic colors such as silver are particularly suitable!
You can make additional silicone molds separately, let them dry, paint them with nail polish, and then stick them to the case with a drop of clear silicone.
- How to make a phone case out of felt
Cut a piece of felt in half lengthwise. If you want a thicker phone case, use two pieces of felt instead. They can be the same color or contrasting colors.
Cut the pieces 1 cm larger than your phone. Place your phone on the first piece of felt. Trace it with a 1 cm wide border. Cut out the felt and then use it as a template for the other pieces.
Place your phone between the two pieces of felt. Make sure all edges and corners are aligned. If you are making a lined sleeve with two different colors of felt, choose one color for the inside and the other color for the outside.
Attach the pieces of felt around your phone. You only need to pin the bottom and two side edges; leave the top edge open. Try to staple the felt around your phone as tightly as possible. The fit will initially be tight but will eventually loosen up.
Remove your phone and sew along the pinned edges. Use the pins as a guide when sewing. Your seam allowance will vary depending on the thickness of your phone. You can do this on a sewing machine or by hand.
If doing this by hand, consider using embroidery floss in a contrasting color.
If you're doing this on a sewing machine, backstitch at the beginning and end of your sewing.
Cut out your seam allowances. Try to cut as close to the seam as possible, about 1/8 inch. For a more unique look, use pinking shears instead.
- How to decorating a plastic phone case
Buy a simple phone case that fits your phone. A clear case works best for this, but depending on the design you choose, you can use a colored one. Once you have your suitcase, choose one of the decorating ideas from the list below.
Decorate a plain case with Puffy Paint. Buy some bulky or dimensional fabric paint at the art store. Use it to draw designs on the outside of your case. Allow the paint to dry completely before sticking it onto your phone. Great design ideas include dots, spirals, zigzags, and chevrons.
Add lace to the inside of a sheer fabric sleeve. Draw the front of the case on a piece of lace. Cut out the tip and coat the inside of the sleeve with decoupage glue. Press the tip into the glue and then coat it with another layer of decoupage glue. Let the glue dry and then cut out the camera hole with a craft blade.
Make sure the glue is clear and glossy.
Add a piece of fabric over the top for a layered effect.
Wrap washi tape around a colored case. Choose a solid case in a color you like. Buy washi tape in coordinating colors or patterns. Wrap the tape around the case, including the sides. Be sure to leave some space between each piece to allow the color of the case to show through. Cut out all the socket/speaker/camera holes with a craft blade.
You can find washi tape in the scrapbooking section of arts and craft stores.
Try a chevron pattern for something more interesting.
Cover a clear sleeve with patterned washi tape for a solid effect. Lay strips of washi tape across the back of a phone case. Make sure the edges are touching and the patterns line up. Turn the phone over and cut off any excess tape hanging down the sides. Also cut out the camera hole. Finally, coat the outside of the case, including the sides, with clear glossy decoupage glue.
You can lay the tape horizontally or vertically.
Do not cover the sides of the phone case.
Add scrapbook paper to the inside of a clear phone case. Transfer the sleeve to a piece of scrapbook paper and then cut it out. Coat the inside of the case with clear decoupage glue. Press the paper, printed side down, into the glue. Let the glue dry and then cut out the camera hole with a craft blade.
You can also use patterned cotton fabric instead.
